Comments on "Out of the Box" Thinking

On Hillary Clinton’s first day at the State Dept. she told everyone to start thinking “outside the box”. It’s a great thing to say. All the scientific, medical and technological advances and inventions of the 20th century came about through “out of the box” thinking.

And, it is really a very, very difficult thing to do. The design function of the mind won’t allow that except upon rare occasion by few individuals. The mind functions based on natural human survival mechanisms which is a good thing because it keeps us safe and alive. However, it also maintains the survival of old programming which precludes “out of the box” thinking most of the time. Under most circumstances you cannot intelligently get true “out of the box” thinking on demand! It is not something that can be “willed.”

Diplomatic solutions often fail to produce breakthrough results because they are usually a recycled version of old approaches based on old thinking. In other words, most seemingly new solutions upon in depth scrutiny are enhanced versions of old concepts dictated by the past. New thinking or “out of the box” thinking is not a reflection of thoughts and ideas one already has.

Common limitations of human conscious awareness make it difficult to access our potential to get beyond old programming. Old unintentional self-programming interferes with our ability to fully recognize all aspects of the pitfalls or obstacles in our most serious major international challenges. This accounts for major problems never being solved or solved far too slowly with great costs in human life, human suffering, instability and in needed resources of all types.

Thus our policies, negotiating methods and interpersonal communication fail to produce definitive solutions. Diplomacy is continually short circuited in large measure by these factors and others.  By a substantial expansion of our conscious awareness we can, on an ongoing basis, consistently see beyond current thinking filtered by the past.

The consulting services and programs we advocate are designed to leave people transformed so that they have that capability on an ever expanding basis. These are not “how to do it” learning experiences. There are no theories, formulas or philosophies to be adopted. Human beings have limitless capabilities AND have unintentional and self-imposed barriers to accessing their unexpressed breakthrough skills. In these resources the barriers are dramatically diminished.

Does this matter? In our view, nothing could matter more since the lives of millions if not billions of people hang in the balance by our overwhelming threats and challenges.

Most of the threats and suffering in the world persist because those trying to solve them are handicapped unknowingly by their own conditioning. This is a common human failing that leaves many people thinking that the resolution to major challenges are more difficult than they actually are.

A Hindu Proverb: The three great mysteries of the world are air to the bird, water to fish and man to himself!
